Why You Should Try Mission Capital’s Job Board

Mission Capital Jobs Board

Job hunting isn’t fun.

It’s time-intensive, emotionally draining, and overall, a hassle that very few people want or need. For even the most accomplished and educated workforce, finding a job where they find purpose and enjoyment is akin to finding a termite at the bottom of the ocean.

On the other side, finding a devoted and competent person to fulfill your organization’s empty role can also seem dauntingly impossible. Either they will be replacing someone with pivotal knowledge and experience, or filling a vital role in a sector that is too often overburdened.

At Mission Capital, we recognize the difficulty for those in the non-profit field. In this blog, we will share some of the best tips for finding your future workplace.

Why is it so hard to find a job?

For those who have been in the job market for a while, you may have noticed that it seems as if landing a good job is getting harder with each passing year. A generation ago, a good education and work ethic – maybe an internship or two – would have been enough for the jobs to find you.

Unfortunately, times have changed.

According to Time Magazine, there are a myriad of reasons why getting a job has become more difficult, including longer interview sessions, hiring scams, and “ghost jobs.”

What is a ghost job, you might ask?

Ghost jobs are positions posted by legitimate companies and organizations, but not for the reasons you may think. These opportunities are not actually meant to be filled.

According to the article in Time Magazine written by Alana Samuels:

“Employers post ghost jobs to get a pool of candidates that they may use someday, to give the impression that their company is growing, and to keep current employees motivated, according to the survey of 1,045 managers involved in the hiring process.”

Even if the job is legitimate, the hiring process could take weeks, or even months to complete. Many times, the employer isn’t even looking for anyone to fill the position immediately, but rather posting for jobs preemptively, which would be a wonderful strategy if it didn’t mean many of those who applied for the job are ghosted for months until the company is actually ready to hire.

According to Joe Mercurio, project manager at Clarify Capital: “Despite 96% of employers claiming they’re actively trying to fill an open role quickly, 40% of employers don’t expect to fill their active job posts for 2–3 months.”

For the average American, two to three months without income could be enough to pitch you into homelessness, debt, or bankruptcy. There are no predictions that this trend will get any better, even for those with university degrees, and only more difficult for those who identify with historically marginalized groups.

It seems a very depressing and dour economy for a jobseeker, right?

Well, there are creative ways to defeat this lack of opportunity. One of the best ways to score your dream job is to highlight your glowing personality!

According to Sho Dewan, CEO of workhap, a career coaching business that helps people obtain high-paying jobs, lack of experience is easy to rectify, but not a bad attitude.

So look at the cover letter and interview process as a chance to demonstrate that you are a good team player and will bring a positive outlook to the organization.

Remember, in the immortal words of Winnie the Pooh:  “You are braver than you believe, smarter than you seem, and stronger than you think.”

Another good tip is to keep your resume updated and tailored to the position you want. Look at the job posting. Any words that contain specific skills or characteristics should go into your resume and cover letter so that tracking systems can locate and match those keywords.

Think of terms such as time management, data assessment, and customer service.

According to Indeed,

“Many employers use Applicant Tracking Systems technology, which scans your resume and searches for keywords to match with the job posting. Based on how this software perceives that your resume matches what the employer is asking for, it then determines if your resume should continue to the hiring manager.”
