Position Details:

Austin Partners in Education (APIE) is looking to hire College Readiness Advocates to join our team for the 2018-19 school year!

The primary responsibility of College Readiness Advocates is to provide academic tutoring to middle and high school students to help them meet college readiness standards outlined by the Texas Success Initiative. This is a full-time, contract position that will end May 28, 2019.

College Readiness Advocates primarily provide academic tutoring in reading, writing, and math to middle and high school students to help prepare them for college level coursework. CR Advocates utilize APIE's College Readiness curriculum to provide small class and individualized tutoring to students at assigned Austin ISD middle schools and high schools. Advocates will receive training on how to utilize the curriculum, create lesson plans, engage students, manage student behavior, and assist students with the college-going process.

This position is ideal for an individual interested in pursuing a career in the education, social work, and/or nonprofit sectors. In addition to managing a tutoring caseload, CR Advocates will gain experience in creating and maintaining strategic partnerships, effectively managing competing priorities, and developing strong communication skills.

Characteristic Duties and Responsibility:

  • Lead small class instruction (7 – 10 students per class) and/or provide small-group, in class support as assigned
  • Utilize APIE’s academic (Math and English Language Arts) and non-academic curriculum to create lesson plans and tutoring objectives tailored to each student’s individual needs
  • Manage a tutoring caseload of 60 – 120 students
  • Advise students regarding college readiness standards at various middle schools and high schools throughout Austin
  • Create and foster effective one-on-one relationships with students to ensure program participation and encourage a college going culture
  • Effectively track student attendance, academic progress, and student engagement
  • Collaborate with APIE and AISD faculty and staff to increase student attainment of college ready status per the Texas Success Initiative
  • Work with Program Supervisors to determine students’ academic roadmap and preparedness for the TSI Assessment
  • Assist with the coordination of student participation in the TSI Assessment testing administration
  • Work with Program Supervisors to increase parent engagement
  • Establish, maintain, and utilize partnerships with on-campus contacts
  • Identify and provide additional tools and resources (including referrals) to students (e.g. FAFSA, TASFA, college application process, etc.)
  • Provide feedback in improving program curriculum and communication strategies with students.
  • Assist College Readiness Program staff with logistic coordination
  • Support College Readiness staff and supervisors with capacity building projects designed to improve and expand program effectiveness
  • Complete other job duties as assigned

Supervision Received: College Readiness Advocates report to the College Readiness Program Manager and College Readiness Program Coordinator 


Qualifications / Requirements:

  • Bachelor Degree in Education, Social Work, or related field
  • Experience tutoring and/or mentoring middle or high school students required
  • Valid government issued ID and access to reliable transportation
  • Must be available to work 40 hours a week Monday through Friday from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm during the length of the contract
  • Graduate experience a plus
  • Spanish fluency a plus

Knowledge / Skills / Ability:

  • Educational training in secondary education or strong reading, writing, and math skills (Algebra, Algebra 2, Geometry, Statistics)
  • Must be proficient in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook)
  • Good organizational skills and flexibility a must
  • Strong communication skills; verbal and written
  • Candidate will exhibit strong initiative and must be able to adapt quickly
  • Candidate will exhibit strong tenacity and problem solving ability, especially in challenging situations
  • Must be positive, personable, and able to relate well to diverse populations, with a particular emphasis on working with young people ages 13-18
  • Strong leadership skills with an ability to foster and grow relationships with middle and high school students, including mentoring and motivating
  • A proven “self-starter” with the ability to work both independently with minimal supervision and collaboratively while observing and complying with all standards of the supervisions
  • Must have a commitment to work collaboratively and harmoniously with the APIE staff, colleagues, community resource agencies, and school district personnel
  • Able to manage multiple job functions simultaneously
  • Comfortable asking questions and follow-up as needed

Compensation:

  • Hourly Rate: $13.50
